Weekly Pay Calculator

One week of pay, calculated the way a weekly pay run calculates it rather than as an annual figure divided by 52. Enter your gross and the result should match your payslip to the cent.

Weekly PAYE is not your annual PAYE divided by 52. Payroll multiplies the week out to a full year, taxes that figure including the 1.75% ACC earners' levy, divides by 52 and truncates to whole cents. The student loan threshold for a week is $464.00, and your KiwiSaver contribution comes off the gross at 3.5% by default.

Your pay for one week

Gross pay for the week
$1,200.00
PAYE (income tax and ACC)
− $231.39
KiwiSaver
− $42.00
Into your account
$926.61

That is $62,400 a year across 52 pays, and you keep 77.2% of each one. On top of it your employer puts $42.00 into your KiwiSaver account this week and pays $12.60 of ESCT on that contribution.

Change the tax code and the KiwiSaver rate to match your own payslip. PAYE here is income tax plus the 1.75% ACC earners' levy, annualised and truncated exactly as a pay run does it, so the cents match your payslip rather than an annual figure divided by 52.

$2,200.00− $569.83− $77.00$1,553.1729.4%

Add an SL tax code and each row loses 12% of the gross above $464.00. On a $1,300.00 week that is $100.32.

Why 52 weekly deductions do not equal the annual figure

Inland Revenue's method truncates rather than rounds, and it does so inside the pay period. On $1,300.00 a week the annualised income is $67,600, the tax genuinely due on that is $13,683.50, and one fifty-second of it is 263.144231. Payroll cuts that to $263.14 and deducts it.

Fifty-two of those weeks withhold $13,683.28, which is $0.22 less than the year requires. It is a trivial amount, and it is deliberate: cents are never rounded up out of a pay packet. The end-of-year square-up settles it.

This is why a calculator that divides an annual figure by 52 disagrees with your payslip by a few cents. The calculator on this page uses the pay-period method instead, which is validated against Inland Revenue's own payday filing casebook.

A week with overtime is taxed as though every week had it

Weekly pay shows the annualising effect more sharply than any other cycle, because a single busy week is a full pay period rather than half of one.

PAYE on a normal week compared with a week including overtime
The weekGrossAnnualised asPAYEEffective rate
40 hours$1,000.00$52,000$171.5017.2%
40 hours plus 15 at time and a half$1,562.50$81,250$348.3022.3%

The overtime added $562.50 of gross and $176.80 of PAYE, which is 31.4% of the extra pay. Nothing is wrong: payroll has assumed you will earn at that rate for all 52 weeks. If you do not, you were over-taxed on that week, and Inland Revenue refunds the difference after 31 March. Overtime is ordinary income, so it is not the extra pay treatment that applies to a bonus.

The weekly student loan threshold

$464.00 a week, which is the $24,128 annual threshold divided by 52 exactly. On an SL code your employer deducts 12% of the gross above it, and nothing at all below it.

Weekly student loan deduction at four levels of gross pay
Gross a weekAbove the thresholdDeduction
$500.00$36.00$4.32
$800.00$336.00$40.32
$1,200.00$736.00$88.32
$1,800.00$1,336.00$160.32

The threshold applies to your main job. On a secondary code the deduction is 12% of every dollar, with no threshold, because the threshold has already been used once.

The year you get paid 53 times

A tax year is 52 weeks and a day, so every five or six years a 53rd payday falls inside one. On $1,200.00 a week those 53 pays withhold $12,263.67 against $12,413.50 genuinely due on $63,600 of income, leaving $149.83 to settle after 31 March. The 53 weekly student loan thresholds also shelter $464.00 more income than the annual rule allows, worth $55.68 of repayment. pay frequency calculator.

Common questions

How do I calculate my weekly take-home pay in New Zealand?

Take the gross for the week and subtract PAYE, your KiwiSaver contribution and any student loan repayment. PAYE itself comes from multiplying the week out to a full year, taxing that annual figure including the ACC earners' levy, then dividing by 52 and truncating to cents. The how PAYE is calculated is set out step by step.

What is the weekly student loan repayment threshold in NZ?

$464.00 a week. On an SL code your employer deducts 12% of the gross above it, so a $900.00 week produces $52.32. The threshold belongs to your main job only, and a secondary code has none at all.

Why is my weekly PAYE not my annual PAYE divided by 52?

Because payroll truncates inside the pay period rather than at the end of the year. The weekly figure is cut to whole cents and never rounded up, so 52 weekly deductions add to slightly less than the tax due on the same annual income. Inland Revenue settles the gap after 31 March.

Why was more tax taken out of a week with overtime?

Because payroll annualises every pay period. A week with overtime is taxed as though you would earn at that rate all year, so the extra hours land in a higher band. More PAYE comes out than the year actually requires, and the excess comes back at the end-of-year square-up.

What happens in a year with 53 weekly pays?

You are paid 53 times inside one tax year, which happens every five or six years. Each week is taxed as one fifty-second of a year, so withholding falls short of the tax due on the larger income, and 53 weekly thresholds shelter one extra week of income from the student loan deduction.
